Soccer Team from San Diego, California
After more than four years’ absence, the MORAVA Soccer team is back
in action, aggressively competing in the Second Division of the San Diego
County Soccer League.
The League is sanctioned by the US Soccer Federation and FIFA. The league has four divisions with a total of more than 50 teams. While soccer is not that popular among Americans, the immigrants living in San Diego county make soccer a major part of their recreational time. In addition to a few American teams in the league, other teams are composed of immigrants from all the major soccer-playing countries of the world. With teams from Brazil, Italy, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Mexico, Portugal, Iraq, Iran--playing in the league is like a miniature United Nations of soccer! Morava is the only primarily Serbian immigrant and second-generation Serbian team.
In addition to the Serbs, MORAVA team includes players from Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and Japan. The members of the team come from Belgrade, Sarajevo, Zagreb, Knin, Paracin, Sofia, Nis, Novi Sad, Trstenik, Budimpesta, Bukutest, Tokio and San Diego. Several members have played professionally, and all have a love of the game that exceeds the desire to win, although winning is always sweet.
